Use Windows XP/2000/NT instead of Windows Me/98

There are great differences in the implementations of the GDI engines (Graphical Device Interface engines) between different Windows versions.

Windows XP, 2000 and NT include a 32-bit GDI, while the GDI of Windows Me and 98 is 16-bit. The effect of this may not always be obvious to the user but in printing performance the difference may be dramatic.

Windows XP, 2000 and NT generally provide much better printing performance than Windows Me/98. If you are currently using Windows Me/98 and if printing takes a long time or produces incomplete results, you should upgrade to Windows XP, 2000 or NT.

Windows XP, 2000 and NT also provide a more isolated environment for drivers and applications. There are fewer possibilities for driver/application conflicts that could result in application termination, for example. This is an additional reason to favor Windows XP/2000/NT over Windows Me/98.

The differences between Windows XP, 2000 and NT are not as big. However, in some cases, Windows XP offers clearly better printing performance.
